Random thoughts

I had another very sad dream today, but I think it’s my mind’s way of trying to sort things out, trying to figure out friendships and relationships.

I had this thought when I was half awake, half asleep:

A lot of churches only teach shoulds:

“What a Christian should do”

“What non-Christians are doing, but they shouldn’t” (It’s really easy to teach like this, and it causes such a feeling of smugness.)

And I had one other should, but I dozed off and forgot it. Will I remember it later?

Sylvia Browne: Sham and Fakery

I just read part of a transcript of a tv show with Sylvia Browne and the parents of Shawn Hornbeck. Shawn was kidnapped by a child molestor several years ago and was just recently returned to his family. During the conversation, Browne told the parents that Shawn was dead.
Here’s part of the transcript:

CRAIG AKERS: Can you tell how far from the area he was taken?

SYLVIA BROWNE: Maybe about 20 miles.

CRAIG: And he’s still within a 20-mile radius even now?

BROWNE: He’s still within a 20-mile radius of — let’s say, here’s where you are, 20-mile radius, but it’s really southwest of where you are.

CRAIG: Southwest.

BROWNE: So whatever is southwest, because it looks like this is — here we go again with the wooded, with the — you know, the wooded areas. So southwest of you.

PAM AKERS: Is there any landmarks around?

BROWNE: Yeah. Strange enough, there are two jagged boulders, which look really misplaced. Because everything is trees, and then all of a sudden, you’ve got these stupid boulders sitting there.

MONTEL WILLIAMS: And he could be found near there?

BROWNE: He’s near the boulders.

PAM: Is he still with us?

BROWNE: No.

CRAIG: Do you see the bicycle anywhere?

BROWNE: I think the — see, here’s what’s strange. I think the–the–the bicycle is in another state in a dump.

In other words, Sylvia Browne was telling his parents the worst possible news — that Shawn was dead, and that his body was in a rocky, forested area within 20 miles of their home. For the next three weeks, the search reportedly focused on finding Shawn’s body in that prescribed area.

Of course, they failed to find the body because last week — four years after he went missing — Shawn Hornbeck turned up very much alive.

Donde Esta catsup?

Son and I decided to hit a Wendy’s drive through on the way home today. When I asked a question, the girl at the window would nod her head instead of answering me. I got frustrated, especially when I asked her a question that wasn’t a yes or no question. We looked in the bag and they’d messed up our order. I told her that, and she just nodded again. So, I asked for the manager.

I guess the manager heard me because she came over to the window and stood there wiping the ledge with a handful of paper napkins while talking to me. The manager and the employee seemed to be upset with me because I wanted to speak English! I was so frustrated and I was so unhappy. I mean, if someone can’t speak English, why put them in a spot where they deal with the public? Couldn’t she have worked the fries and salad department?

The manager was not helpful and I left without getting my order fixed. But then again, the manager didn’t offer to be helpful and I don’t even think she came close to being polite.

I won’t go back to that Wendy’s and I also filed a complaint on the corporate website. I doubt I’ll hear anything back from them. But I still feel that if the business advertises in English, if they have signs in English, then they should do business in English.

More from “Get Rich Slowly”

Wow, a lot of information there to digest, like “Healthy Food on an Unhealthy Budget” which talks about how to eat healthy on a budget. There’s also a scathing review of Matthew Lesko, but unfortunately, I closed that window and I’m too lazy to go looking right now. There’s also a link to a site called Metafilter, and I’m lurking there right now.

A great blog about finances and frugality

Wow, this is one of the best websites I’ve ever seen, covers everything from credit cards to getting out of debt. I think the creator of Get Rich Slowly has posted a gold mine of information.

A sad dream

I had a very vivid, yet sad dream:

I dreamed that an old friend came over to visit. For some reason, the visit didn’t go very well, almost as if we didn’t get along, instead of being friends. As he was leaving, he said to me, “Dana, you’ve got to remember that there aren’t a lot of people that are interested in you, they’re just interested in you being interested in them.”

I don’t plan to post a lot of my dreams but this is really stuck in my head for some reason.

Watercolors and memories

I just tried to make a payment to the electric company but the recording wanted the last four digits of my checking account. I’ve been paying them like this for years, don’t they know that by now? If their electronic records can’t remember my checking account info, how could they expect me to remember it?

;-)

Okay, in case I forget this site, it’s pretty cool, teaches people how to paint with watercolors . I prefer to use pastels, but then again, I may get brave one day and want to try a different medium.
